Abstract

This study is conducted to know whether there is any significant different in the improvement of students’ pronunciation through reading aloud and without reading aloud at SMP Kyai Hasyim Surabaya.
To achieve the objective of the study, the researcher conducted an experimental quantitative research using two groups; experiment group and control group. The researcher takes 20 students as samples from Class VIII A as the experiment group and 20 students from Class VIII B as control group. In solving the problems, the writer carry out an experimental study using statistical method called t-test. The data is collected using oral test. After getting the data, the researcher analyzed it with t test.
From the result of pretest and posttest after the treatment, the researcher concludes that the experiment group shows significant different in improving their pronunciation through reading aloud by getting means score 57.5 in the pretest and 74 in the posttest. Meanwhile, the control group shows no significant different by getting means score 59.5 in the pretest and 59.75 in the posttest. To makes the research more reliable and analyzes the hypothesis, t-test formula is used. As a result, he obtained t value is 6.153 so the t value is higher than the critical value (6.153 > 2.024). It is concluded that there is significant difference between teaching pronunciation using reading aloud and without using reading aloud.
